As freezing winter temperatures set in, rescuers at Whiskers-a-GoGo received a message from a concerned couple who had spotted a small tabby kitten struggling to survive on the streets.
Instead of ignoring the situation, the couple chose to step in. They reached out to Whiskers-a-GoGo and Bushwick Street Cats, and together they organized a rescue effort. With shared resources, humane traps, and determination, they worked tirelessly to bring the kitten to safety.
Night after night, in the bitter cold, they placed food and set traps while carefully observing the kitten’s behavior. During this process, they successfully rescued two adult tabby cats, ensuring both were spayed and received proper medical care. However, the tiny kitten remained out of reach.
Then, a heavy snowstorm hit the area, and the kitten disappeared completely. Days passed without any sightings, but the rescuers refused to give up.
About a week before Christmas, they returned once again for another attempt. Late at night, they set a trap using Popeye’s chicken as bait. They even played kitten sounds from a phone, hoping to lure him out.
Finally, in the quiet darkness, they heard a faint meow in response. Moments later, the small kitten stepped into the trap. After days of patience and effort, he was finally safe.
Once indoors, the kitten was scared and defensive. He hissed and hid behind a toilet, unsure of his surroundings. But it soon became clear that despite his tough behavior, he was not meant for life on the streets.
Slowly, he began to trust his foster mom, Rachel. With patience, kindness, and plenty of treats, he started to relax. The fear in his eyes gradually faded as he realized he was safe.
Covered in dirt, he was gently cleaned and wrapped in a soft towel, experiencing comfort and warmth for the first time in a long while.
As he began to explore, they noticed he had a limp. A veterinary check revealed that he had a dislocated hip, likely from before his rescue. Even during the examination, he continued to purr. That’s when they named him Benny.
Benny will need surgery, but he is now in loving hands. His new family absolutely adores him, and one of them says he reminds her of her childhood cat.
He is very food-motivated and quick to learn. Benny has already learned to give adorable nose boops in exchange for treats.
He spent his first Christmas and New Year in a warm home, far away from the cold streets. With a full belly and a safe place to sleep, his past life now feels like a distant memory.
Today, Benny enjoys lounging on the couch or curling up beside his humans. Sometimes, he even falls asleep face-first into the cushions, completely relaxed. Once his hip is healed, he is expected to learn even more tricks and continue thriving in his new life.
His story is a reminder that rescue is never the work of just one person. It takes a whole community—neighbors, feeders, rescuers, donors, and fosters—who come together and refuse to give up.
