Kitten Rejected by a Cat

A kitten rejected by a cat has found love and acceptance in others. Now, she’s rocking life with her one back paw and charming everyone she meets.

A kitten named Fruit Fly weighed barely a pound when she arrived at an animal shelter alongside her mother and two other cats.

Staff quickly noticed something was off—the mother cat wanted nothing to do with the kitten. “For her safety, they separated her and then realized that her back legs had some pretty significant abnormalities,” Thrifted Kittens Animal Rescue shared.

In nature, animals can sense when their offspring are unhealthy and may reject them. That seemed to be the case for Fruit Fly.

Not even four weeks old, Fruit Fly scooted around by dragging one hind leg and hopping with the other. To give her the best chance at a full life, she underwent surgery to amputate the leg that lacked sensation.

The little fighter bounced back with fierce resilience, refusing to let anything hold her back.

Her foster mom, Kameyon, soon discovered another challenge: Fruit Fly was incontinent and needed assistance using the bathroom. Undeterred, the team at Thrifted Kittens Animal Rescue stepped up to support her care and rehabilitation.

A plan was put in place to strengthen her body and improve her mobility. “She has such a big personality, and being a tripod doesn’t slow her down at all.”

Fruit Fly began physical therapy and exercises to build up her one back leg and expand her range of motion. “Although she may walk funny sometimes, she has gained better capability to stand and get around.”

Using her functional back leg, she learned to run, play, and explore the world, all in her own remarkable way.

That’s when Kameyon’s resident cat, Bonzai, stepped in. Fruit Fly was a tiny potato next to her big foster brother, but what she lacked in size, she made up for in pure energy and determination. Bonzai became her mentor, playmate, and source of comfort.

Though rejected by her mother, Fruit Fly had found a kindred spirit who adored her just as she was.

Bonzai, who has a soft spot for foster kittens, took Fruit Fly under his wing. He groomed her like a mother would and shared sunny window spots where they’d watch the world go by.

After a playful romp, Fruit Fly would curl up beside him for a well-earned nap. “I’m so lucky to have such a great foster caretaker like Bonzai,” Kameyon shared.

After weeks of hard work, Fruit Fly made incredible progress. She now zips through the house at lightning speed, chasing toys and carrying them in her mouth like prized trophies. She’s even become a “soccer” pro, batting toy balls across the floor with impressive precision.

Once she sets her sights on a target, there’s no stopping her.

“The rehabilitation specialists are very hopeful that her mobility will continue to improve as she grows.”

Now, at three and a half months old, Fruit Fly has blossomed into a fearless little acrobat. She darts around like a furry blur, pouncing, tumbling, and leaping with unstoppable confidence.
