A mother cat and her only kitten were rescued from a harsh life on a porch and are finally beginning the happy chapter they always deserved.
A weak and undernourished mother cat was discovered abandoned on a porch, with her tiny kitten staying close by her side. They had been surviving on scraps, never getting enough to truly satisfy their hunger.
When volunteers from Tails High heard about their situation, they quickly stepped in to help. They had already rescued other cats from the same place, many of whom had difficult starts, and they were determined to give this mother and her kitten a better future.
Cat Wanders into a Backyard, Peering Through the Back Door, Until She Has What She Came for
As soon as the rescue request came through, the volunteers knew exactly what to name them.
“We thought they looked like a pair straight out of a children’s story,” Tails High shared. That’s how they became Storybook and Fable.
Both were in rough shape—malnourished and covered in fleas. Storybook’s fur was thin and patchy due to skin issues, while Fable was anemic but showed incredible determination to keep going.
“We are so thankful for our volunteers who respond so quickly when help is needed.”
Once safe, Storybook and Fable were placed in a foster home where they could begin healing. With proper food and dedicated care, Storybook slowly regained her strength, and her fur started growing back. Fable’s appetite returned, along with her playful and lively nature.
After stabilizing, they moved in with Jennifer, an experienced foster caregiver, to continue their recovery.
“Fable is such a determined little soul. She had a tough start, but her attitude is ‘I can do anything,’” Jennifer shared.
“Mama Storybook is incredibly sweet and loves being close to people. She’s happiest sitting in a lap or relaxing nearby where she can keep an eye on everything.”
Storybook is affectionate and calm, a true cuddle lover. Fable, following her mother’s example, has also become a loving little companion who enjoys being close.
“Fable loves kisses, being held, and curling up on a lap or even a shoulder.”
Now full of energy, she has discovered how fun it is to play—running around, chasing toys, and pouncing with confidence. Though she is small, her personality is big and bold.
“Sometimes she prefers playing over eating.”
Storybook continues to improve, and her once-bare patches are filling in with soft fur. In time, her full, beautiful coat will return.
“She enjoys watching birds, loves playing with toys—especially wand toys—and even tries to carry them away with her.”
Fable often seeks out her mom for grooming, then snuggles beside her for naps.
She’s also very curious about the world beyond her space. Whenever she sneaks out, she confidently walks through the house as if she owns it, completely unfazed by the other cats around her.
“They are starting a new chapter, enjoying every cuddle and moment with their foster family, and showing just how powerful love and care can be for animals in need,” Tails High shared.
Thanks to the kindness of the volunteers, the story of this mother and daughter has been transformed. What once was a story of struggle and survival is now one of comfort, safety, and a future filled with love.
