Several months ago, while going about her duties, Courtney, an animal care specialist at the SPCA Westchester in New York, noticed a tiny ball of fur that caught her attention. The kitten, about the size of a hand, had been brought to the shelter alone. She gazed up at Courtney with large, cartoon-like eyes. Unable to resist, Courtney stopped what she was doing to greet the little one. As soon as she reached out to pet the tabby, the kitten melted into her hand.
Whenever Courtney would pull her hand away, the kitten would look up at her pleadingly, as if asking for more affection.
At just four weeks old, the kitten craved companionship. Her eyes followed Courtney’s every move, and she quickly tugged at her heartstrings. Courtney knew she couldn’t bear to leave the kitten alone overnight. Before her shift ended, she made the decision to give the kitten the best chance to thrive by fostering her.

“I came across her as I was cleaning and just knew I had to take her home to foster,” Courtney shared with Love Meow.
The Start of a Beautiful Bond
As soon as the kitten arrived at Courtney’s foster home, her playful personality burst to life. She explored every corner of her new environment, bounding around with endless curiosity. “She was full of personality when I got her home,” Courtney said.
To make sure the kitten never felt lonely, Courtney placed a giant teddy bear in her bed. The kitten curled up beside it, comforted by her new plush companion.
Like a tiny duckling, the kitten followed Courtney everywhere, craving constant affection. She was a perfect little doll when being held, but once she started to play, she transformed into a whirlwind of energy. When she ran out of steam, she would flop onto her side mid-play and drift off into an impromptu nap.

The Naming of Poppy
After spending some time with the kitten, Courtney struggled to come up with a name for her. So, she posted a video on Instagram and TikTok, asking for suggestions. She then picked the top three names and let the kitten choose her own name. Courtney wrote each name on a small piece of paper and rolled them into balls. Without hesitation, the kitten snatched the paper that said “Poppy.”
Poppy’s Growth and Adventures
As Poppy grew, her energy and confidence flourished. Her baby blues gradually warmed into a soft amber, and her adventurous spirit truly came to life. She began joining Courtney on car rides, delighted by the new sights and scents along the way. “She loves car rides, she loves people, and she absolutely loves to play,” Courtney said.
Every morning, Poppy greeted Courtney with the sweetest cuddles, starting her day with a smile. “Poppy is incredibly special. She helped me get through some tough times when I was fostering her,” Courtney added.
A Forever Home for Poppy
Finding Poppy a forever home meant the world to Courtney, as it allowed her to continue fostering other kittens in need. Courtney hoped that she would be able to stay in touch with Poppy once she was ready for her next chapter.
As it turned out, the perfect family for Poppy was much closer than Courtney expected. Her friends fell in love with the sweet tabby and decided to give her the forever home she deserved. “Her new parents got her this bird toy that hangs from the ceiling—she is obsessed with it—and a heated window bed (where she loves to nap).”
