Kitten Found Himself in a Drain Unable to Get Out, Many Came Together to Help the Young Cat

A little kitten found himself trapped in a roadside drain, unable to escape, but thanks to the kindness of many people, he was rescued and given a chance at a better life.

A Good Samaritan spotted a kitten darting across the road and decided to check it out. As she looked for the kitten, she heard faint cries from a nearby storm drain and realized the poor kitten was trapped inside. She immediately reached out to Liberation Cat House for help. “It was just five minutes from my place, so I jumped in my car and rushed over,” said Alyssa, a volunteer with the rescue.

“It didn’t take long to locate the drain as the kitten was crying loudly.”

Rescue Efforts Begin
Alyssa attempted various makeshift solutions to free the kitten, but none worked. Luckily, help arrived quickly. “A few rescue directors and friends joined the effort,” Alyssa added. “With their help, we removed the grate covering the drain and crawled inside.”

With a thunderstorm approaching, they knew they had to act fast to save the kitten.

Storm Drain Rescue
Despite attempts to lure the kitten out with food and recordings of other meowing cats, the kitten wouldn’t budge. Then, David volunteered to crawl through the narrow, 16-inch pipe to reach the kitten. “There wasn’t enough space to turn back. The only way out was to crawl through the entire pipe, which stretched across four lanes of traffic and a large median,” he explained.

As David crawled through the drain, Stacey stood on the other end, ready to catch the kitten.

“When the kitten finally got close, Stacey scooped him up and placed him safely in a carrier,” said Ashley, a director of Liberation Cat House. David emerged on the other side, covered in cobwebs and spiders, but relieved that the kitten was safe. Soon after, the storm hit with heavy rain and hail.

A Fresh Start for Luigi
The kitten, now named Luigi, meowed continuously during the car ride home. After a few hisses, he started to settle down. “Once I started petting him, he relaxed,” said his foster mom. Luigi handled his bath like a pro, and after being wrapped in a towel, he began purring in her arms.

“I gave him a stuffed animal, and he immediately cuddled with it, purring and kneading on the blanket.”

With a full belly and a warm bed, Luigi quickly adapted to his new life. He started greeting his foster mom and nuzzling against her, filling the room with his gentle purrs. “His appetite is excellent, and he clearly loves attention,” Ashley shared.

Grateful for the Rescue
“I’m so grateful that so many people came together to save him. Just 30 minutes after we rescued him, the heavy storm rolled in with rain and hail. If we hadn’t gotten him out in time, he likely would’ve drowned,” Ashley added.

“I told him that he made it through the worst, and that life is only going to get better from here.”

A New Life for Luigi
In just a few days of being indoors, Luigi transformed into a true lap cat. He loves spending time with his foster family, curling up in their laps and kneading contentedly.

Now, Luigi is his foster mom’s little shadow, always eager for her affection. It took a village to rescue this kitten, and now he is thriving, living his best life as the most lovable lap cat.
