Workers Discover Ceiling Cats in Office, Which Leads to Several Eventful Days of Saving Many KittensAfter Saving the Kittens, They Never Stop Searching for Mother Cat, Ultimately Giving Her Best Outcome

Workers at an office recently stumbled upon a surprising discovery—what they later called “ceiling cats.” This unexpected situation quickly turned into a multi-day rescue mission that saved several kittens and changed their lives for the better.

Last month, Orphan Kitten Project, a rescue run by veterinary students at UC Davis, received a call from a local car rental office. Employees had been hearing soft footsteps and faint meows coming from the ceiling but had no idea how to reach the kittens. At first, they decided to wait, hoping the mother cat would eventually bring them down on her own.

However, the kittens had other plans. True to their curious and adventurous nature, they didn’t wait around. One tiny orange tabby, full of courage despite his size, made a bold leap from the ceiling. Amazingly, he landed safely on the lobby floor without any injuries. Rescuers quickly picked him up and placed him into foster care. A few days later, one of his siblings followed his daring example.

These brave jumps helped rescuers locate the kittens’ hiding spot. About 10 feet up the wall, they found a small ledge leading into a hole connected to the ceiling and plumbing area. With this discovery, the team came up with a plan to bring the rest of the kittens out safely.

Using food as bait, they tempted the kittens to come out of hiding. One by one, the curious little ones appeared. Armed with a tall ladder and careful timing, rescuers gently captured each kitten as they peeked out. They continued the process until no kittens remained in the ceiling.

In total, seven kittens were rescued. They were all placed into foster homes where they could begin socializing and adjusting to life with humans. The rescue didn’t stop there—shortly after, the feral mother cat was safely trapped, spayed to prevent future litters, and then returned to her familiar environment.

As kitten season continues, efforts like TNR (trap-neuter-return) play a crucial role in controlling the stray cat population and reducing the number of kittens entering shelters.

Adjusting to a new life wasn’t immediate for the kittens. After spending their early weeks in a quiet, dark space without human interaction, learning to trust people took time. But with patience and gentle care from their foster families, they slowly began to feel safe.

Jiggy, the fearless kitten who made the first leap, quickly adapted and became more confident. Soon after, Pigeon—the second jumper—joined him in embracing their new life. The remaining kittens also blossomed at their own pace, showing off their unique personalities as they settled in.

With consistent care, nutritious meals, and plenty of playtime, the kittens have transformed into happy, energetic, and affectionate companions. Many of them will soon be ready to find their forever homes.

What began as mysterious noises in a ceiling turned into a heartwarming rescue story. Thanks to the compassion and dedication of many individuals, seven kittens and their mother now have a much brighter future ahead.
