After rescuing the kittens, the team didn’t stop there—they kept searching tirelessly for their mother, determined to give the family the best possible future.
When a litter of five tiny kittens arrived at IndyHumane, volunteers immediately stepped in, offering around-the-clock care while continuing their mission to find the mother cat.
At just about two weeks old, the kittens had a much better chance of survival with their mom. While volunteers ensured they were fed, clean, and safe, the search for their mother never stopped.
A few days later, relief filled the rescue when the mother cat was finally brought to safety.
As soon as she was reunited with her kittens, she instantly recognized them and resumed caring for them without hesitation.
The kittens were clearly overjoyed, nursing side by side and drifting off peacefully to the sound of her gentle purrs. “She is incredibly sweet and very attentive to her babies,” shared Jennifer, a volunteer.
Now settled comfortably in her new space, the mother cat—named Birdie—spent her days showering her kittens with love and meeting all their needs. “She already seems much more relaxed and often purrs while nursing them.”
With their mom by their side, the kittens—all boys—quickly began gaining weight and hitting important milestones.
Birdie proved to be an exceptional mother, always patient and affectionate, making sure each kitten received equal care and attention. “She’s also very trusting with me around her kittens, which makes everything easier.”
Even when she needed a short break, Birdie stayed close. She never wandered far and always returned in time to feed and care for her babies.

As the kittens grew stronger and more curious, they began exploring beyond their nest.
By five weeks old, they showed interest in solid food, nibbling on kibble but still preferring to nurse. Birdie happily continued to care for them while they learned at their own pace.
She also made sure they stayed clean, giving them regular grooming sessions and keeping them spotless.
Soon, the kittens mastered using the litter box and started exploring every corner of their space, full of energy and curiosity.
The kittens—Lark, Sparrow, Finch, Wren, and Starling—grew quickly and enjoyed every moment of their playful days.
As they became more independent, Birdie began relaxing more, playing with toys and even climbing the cat tree for the first time.
Recently, Birdie’s journey reached a happy ending when she found her forever home. Estimated to be around three years old, she likely had multiple litters before, but now she finally gets to be loved as a pet.
Meanwhile, Lark, Wren, Finch, and Sparrow were adopted in pairs, and their brother Starling is still waiting for his forever home.
