A tiny kitten was brought into a municipal shelter after being found outside, barely holding on to life.
Nikki, an experienced animal rescuer and foster caregiver, rushed to the shelter as soon as she heard about the kitten’s condition. She knew immediate help was critical. “She had been starving on the streets, suffering from severe malnutrition and a serious upper respiratory infection,” Nikki shared with Love Meow.
The kitten, later named Rosie, weakly lifted her head when she heard Nikki’s voice, using every bit of strength she had left. Shelter notes described her as “depressed” while in her kennel.

Rosie was extremely frail and required round-the-clock syringe feeding. As she continued to fight the infection, Nikki had to regularly clean her nose and face to help her breathe comfortably. At just 1.6 pounds, she was dangerously underweight.
While feeding her, Nikki noticed something surprising—Rosie had double fangs. This revealed that she was older than expected, around five months old, when she should have weighed at least twice as much.
Determined to save her, Nikki began feeding Rosie small meals every few hours to avoid overwhelming her fragile system. She kept her warm, hydrated her with fluids, and gave her constant love and attention.
“I knew she was going to be okay when I saw her eating and growing,” Nikki said.
As Rosie regained strength, her appetite improved. She soon began eating on her own, excitedly tapping her paws at mealtime. Nikki even brought her to work at Hearts Alive Village so she could continue receiving close care. Before long, Rosie filled the room with her loud, happy purrs.
Although she enjoyed her playpen at home, Rosie loved cuddles the most. The moment Nikki held her, she would start purring intensely. “She truly blossomed when she felt warmth and love,” Nikki added.
During a veterinary visit to remove an abscess, Rosie remained calm and trusting, as if she understood she was being helped. “She actually fell asleep and kneaded her paws the whole time. She’s such a sweetheart, and she got a treat afterward.”
Once fully healed, Rosie’s playful personality came to life. She rolled around on her cat tree and eagerly batted at toys.
In just two weeks, Rosie nearly doubled in size and had triple the energy. She met the resident dog, Bradley, and instantly bonded, rubbing against her and leaning in for affection.
She also visited the Cat Café at Hearts Alive Village, where she met another cat named Harrison. After a brief moment of hesitation, Rosie quickly warmed up to him, happily accepting his companionship.
