A tiny rescued kitten is taking a little longer to grow, but he has a whole team of older cats cheering him on every step of the way.
The rescue journey of a kitten named Cookie Crumb has been truly remarkable.
Cookie Crumb arrived at FosterBabyCats, a volunteer-run rescue, along with his two siblings. They were immediately placed in an incubator, as kittens under three weeks old cannot regulate their body temperature.
It soon became clear that they were likely born prematurely. “Cookie Crumb didn’t even have fur on his ears when I got him,” Jillian, founder of the rescue, shared with Love Meow.
Despite every effort to save all three kittens, Cookie Crumb became the only survivor. He approached every feeding with strong determination and never gave up.
Kittens usually open their eyes fully at around two weeks, but Cookie Crumb didn’t begin opening his until day nineteen. Even before he could see, he would wiggle across his nest to find the warmest spot or push his way toward the incubator door whenever it was time to eat.
To make sure he never felt alone, Jillian gave him a faux mama cat with a heartbeat, and Cookie Crumb would curl up beside it during every nap.
Once his eyes opened, he became more confident and curious. He would crawl to the edge of the incubator demanding his bottle. With more enthusiasm than balance, he sometimes climbed back into the incubator after feeding, only to realize he wasn’t quite ready to sleep again.
Thanks to Jillian’s late-night feedings and constant care, Cookie Crumb reached another milestone—he started playing with his plush toy. Though he moved slowly, he would bite and kick with all his strength before eventually falling asleep mid-play.
He became very attached to his foster mom, often burrowing into her hair for comfort. For the first time, he fell asleep outside the incubator, safely resting in Jillian’s arms.
Cookie Crumb may be developing a bit slower, but he grows stronger every day. As a single kitten, he needs other cats to guide him and teach him important behaviors.
Once he was old enough to begin weaning, the older cats in the home stepped in to help. “He is an only kitten, and we are doing our best to find him a companion, so he spends a lot of time with older foster cat ‘uncles.’”
Dakota, a former stray who now enjoys a warm home, has become a mentor to rescued kittens. He took Cookie Crumb under his wing, grooming him and showing him the ropes. Pup, a lively cat who doesn’t let paralysis hold him back, happily joined in helping care for him.
Other cats—Kevin, Chip, Shorty, and Tabby—have also welcomed the little kitten as part of their family.
Cookie Crumb recently turned one month old and has finally caught up in size. He toddles across every surface he can reach, eager to explore the world around him. Born with a short, stubby tail, he wiggles it adorably as he moves.
“It doesn’t matter what’s playing on the tablet—he watches it.”
Whenever he hears Jillian’s voice, he pauses and listens closely, bobbing his head as if he understands every word. Surrounded by loving feline friends and his caring foster mom, his days are filled with warmth and discovery.
The best moment of each day is when Cookie Crumb gives the sweetest kisses before relaxing peacefully in Jillian’s arms.
Cookie Crumb has come a long way from being a fragile premature kitten. He has overcome every challenge and continues to thrive with the support of his foster family. Though small in size, he carries the spirit of a true fighter.
Soon enough, he will master playful kitten mischief, following in the footsteps of the older cats who have supported him since the beginning.
