About two months ago, Heidi Shoemaker, the founder of Foster Kitten Mama, rescued a family of five from a shelter.
Rory, a shy tuxedo cat, huddled in the corner of her kennel with her four kittens. Thanks to transport volunteers, she was whisked away from the overcrowded shelter and began a new life in foster care.
Heidi created a quiet, cozy space for Rory and her kittens, but Rory was extremely anxious when she first arrived.
Rory’s Initial Fear
Wide-eyed and licking her lips, Rory was terrified, seeking refuge. Despite her fear, she was not aggressive. Heidi gave her space to settle in, keeping an eye on them through a camera.
“She finally jumped into the nest (to be with her kittens) after about five hours,” Heidi shared, relieved to see her settle.
Rory’s Reaction to Caregiving
Whenever Heidi came to weigh the kittens (Cormic, Teagan, Callum, and Tierney), Rory would slip behind the box, trying to stay hidden. “She jumps out of the nest and hides when I come over, but that makes it easier to scoop them up and replace their blanket, weigh them, and return them,” Heidi explained.
At two weeks old, the kittens had bright eyes but began having stomach issues.
Recovery and Playtime
Thankfully, Rory’s foster mom was dedicated and ensured the kittens recovered fully. Once back on track, the kittens started waddling around and strengthening their legs.
Tierney, the Siamese mix, discovered her loud voice and wasn’t shy about using it. She would scream if Rory was away too long, demanding her return. “Sweet Mama Rory still doesn’t want me to touch her, but she will eat with me just outside the pen,” Heidi said.
The Kittens Blossom
After moving to a larger space, the kittens began to explore, and their personalities started to shine. While the other kittens engaged in slow-motion wrestling matches, Cormic, the tabby, became a little spitfire, tugging at a feather toy with all his might.
Rory remained distant but relaxed. She even dozed off in front of Heidi while the kittens zoomed around like tiny whirlwinds. “We love seeing them transition from little beans into running, leaping, and playing furballs.” Heidi smiled.
Adoption Time
When the kittens were ready for adoption, they quickly found loving homes in pairs, ensuring they always had a companion. Heidi worried about Rory, knowing that timid mother cats are often overlooked.
She hoped that a special family would see past her shyness and provide the time and patience Rory needed to bloom.
Rory’s New Beginning
Then, the most amazing thing happened. Heidi received the perfect application for Rory. “A wonderful woman contacted me about Rory, saying she’s an empty nester like Rory and has a lot of time to devote to her. She’s ready to give her the time and space she needs to flourish.”
Last weekend, Rory graduated from foster care and joined her new mom in her forever home. “Rory has had a rough start, but from here on out, it’s nothing but good things for her,” Heidi said.
“She is adjusting so well in her new home. I’m so excited for her.” Heidi beamed.
